MANCHESTER, England (AP) — He was one of the standout players at the World Cup. Now striker Codi Gakpo appears to have kicked off the winter transfer window with a move from PSV Eindhoven to Liverpool. The Dutch club announced that it had agreed to a transfer for an undisclosed amount, in order to loan out the attacker from the national team.
"It is imminent that the 23-year-old attacker leaves for England as soon as he meets the necessary formalities to complete the transfer," PSV said in a statement.
Marcel Brands, PSV's general manager, described the deal as a "record transfer" for the club.
Liverpool have not confirmed the deal.
The transfer period does not begin until January 1, the confirmation of the proposed transfer was surprising. Different reports had indicated that Manchester United was the team that would recruit Gakpo.
